Originally, I was just going to make a costume for myself, but at the last minute, I went ahead and made a matching vest so that Kali could go as Wendy. While she’s a minor character in the OVA, she has a much bigger role in the TV series.
I made the coat and vest for this one from scratch, but I bought the skirt, shirt, tie, glasses, and other accessories from stores. The shoes I found in the back of my closet, and the book I got from my own collection. (I’ll admit right now that I own well over 800 books. Stop looking at me like that.)
Yomiko is near and dear to my heart because I too am addicted to reading and books. However, I have yet to exhibit any paper using abilities, and I have to work around a much smaller budget. Such is life.

This costume debuted in two parts. Part one was at Anime Mid-Atlantic. I borrowed the wig from my Yomiko Readman costume, and I was missing her jacket. The reason? My sewing machine up and died on me halfway through! The only reason I was able to wear it at all that weekend was because we split the hand sewing. I finished the kimono base and Kali made me the obi.
Part two was at Otakon. This time, the costume had its own wig, and I sewed the jacket successfully on my shiny new sewing machine, which is superior in every way to my previous one.
Kali made the Obi, the jewelry, and donated the wig. I made the jacket and the kimono.
Name: Kaylee
Series: Firefly

Kaylee Frye is a cheerful and outgoing mechanic onboard the ship Serenity. It’s hard to keep her down, and she always looks for the best possible outcome. On my good days, I can be just as overwhelmingly cheerful, and I’m certainly geeky enough to relate to that side of her.
The coveralls came out great, and buying a used pair really gave them that authentic look. I’m annoyed that I was never able to get the right fabric for the jacket. Sure, I found something shiny and blue, but it’s not brocade or silk, like the one in the show.
The easiest part of this costume was modifying the coveralls and adding the patches. The hardest part of this costume was making the parasol. There’s no easy way to draw a spiral, let alone paint one with three stripes.
